Mó Lollipop.

Pizza time.

This week the Scoil Bhríde Smarties made pizza in class. We used ingredients to make the dough. These were strong flour, olive oil, yeast and water. We were very careful when making the dough and made sure to wash our hands before we kneaded the dough.
Here is a good song that might help you remember how to wash your hands.

Here is how we made the pizza... hope you enjoy!

Our favourite.

This week we talked about about favourite things in maths. Here are three charts that we made during the week. Why don't you ask yourself these questions about each chart?

How many children liked each thing on the chart?
What was the most popular?
What was the least popular?
What was your favourite?

Maybe you can make your own chart at home by counting up how many knives, forks and spoon are in the cutlery drawer? Please bring it in to school and we will have a look at it in class.
Enjoy,

Mr. O' Regan

Halloween 2011.

This last week we had a very good time at school. It was Halloween and we got to dress up as monsters, ghosts, witches and all sorts of scary people. Teachers turned into pirates, vampires werewolves and witches. It must have been the scariest day ever at Scoil Bhríde!!
Here is a little video of how our week went.
Readers beware...you're in for a scare!!!!

2nd and 3rd Class football league in Tullamore.

This week saw Scoil Bhríde Primary School boys play in the schools first ever football blitz. Scoil Bhríde picked a team of second and third class boys to compete against the third and fourth class children from around the county. This age gap didn’t seem to bother our boys however, as they put on an excellent display of football and showed an admirable amount of discipline. Tullamore Town Football Club hosted the event which took place on their astro-turf pitches.
Scoil Bhríde got off to a flying start against Clara with scores coming from Adam
McGlade, Joe Bergin, Jim Bergin and Séan Mustapha, while Robbie Rolandi and Mark O’
Leary stood like a brick wall in the line of defence. Gavin Kelly, Jake Connolly, Jason McNamara, Stephen Davey and Aleksss Dinsbergs all played a vital role as they freshened up the side. However the final two minutes saw the tides turn when Clara managed to slot away two goals, enough for them to take home the victory and beat Scoil Bhríde by one single point.
The next match saw Scoil Bhríde play Gaelscoil an Eiscir Riada. Scoil Bhríde began with much the same style and charisma as they did in the first game. Joe Bergin slotted in a couple of early goals, however it was the solid hands of Jacob ‘Kuba’ Golack that drove the Edenderry side on. Goals and points came sailing between the Gaelscoil posts from all angles, as Jack Hooper hit one of the scores of the match. There was no doubt that Scoil Bhríde were the better side and they proved this on the day.
Scoil Colm Poil would prove to be Scoil Bhrídes toughest opponents, however the sides traded scores for almost the whole match. Gavin Kelly came on to put away an inspirational goal, but even this was not enough to put away the home side. Scoil Bhríde narrowly missed out on the victory.
An enjoyable day was had by both teachers and children attending the blitz. We would like to thank the second and third class of Scoil Bhríde for their excellent behaviour on the day. The referees were very impressed that the discipline that the school showed on and off the field. We would like to thank Alan Mulhall for all his efforts in organising the blitz and we would also like to thank all the boys and girls who are playing on the lunchtime league. During the year all of these children will get a chance to shine and hopefully represent the school in more football competitions.

Is crann láidir mé.

Is crann láidir mé, mo chosa sa chré,
Mo ghéaga ag luascadh,
Go bríomhar sa ghaoth.

Na duilleoga glasa ag damhsa go gasta,
Is mé atá sásta,
Is crann láidir mé

Rógairí ag Spraoi

Feach ar seo.
Ár fiseán Gaeilga nua.

Mom or Dad might help you remember the poem. These are the words...

Aon, dó, aon, dó, trí -
Rógairí ag déanamh spraoi.
Aon, dó, aon, dó, trí –
Piliúirí ag na rógairí.
Siar is aniar leis na pilliúirí,
Sall is anall leis na rógairí
Umf! Amf! Hí! Hí! Hí!
Seachain, seachain na piliúirí.
Aon, dó, aon, dó, trí -
Rógairí ag déanamh spraoi.
Aon, dó, aon, dó, trí –
Piliúirí ag na rógairí.
Féach anois, Phléasc na piliúirí!
Cleití, cleití ar fud an tí.
Umf! Amf! Hí! Hí! Hí!
Rógairí ag déanamh spraoi.

Trees.

Last week we went out into the field to look at some trees. We found a big tree with big roots going into the ground. The tree had branches and twigs and leaves. The tree had a bark that made up part of the trunk.

If you want to learn a little more about trees there are some great worksheets here on the Coillte website.

Best of luck,

Trocáire Update!!

Thanks for all the help Scoil Bhríde recieved in their 'Trócaire Lenten Campaign'. We raised a grand total of €240. 72c With the help of all the smarties collecting money each morning during Lent. This money will mean a lot to all the poor places like Honduras, which we made a video of earlier in the year!

Intercultural Day

Intercultural day at Scoil Bhríde is soon approaching, so we decided to make a video about two children, Chad from Kenya and Yoko from China. We looked at Chad's life in Ireland, and we saw how different it was to Yoko's.

What was the difference between the two characters?

Could the children have made a difference to Yoko's life?

Why do you think Yoko had a much harder time in Ireland than Chad did?

Can you make a difference to somebody new in your school?

We hope you enjoy our first clay motion movie, and feel free to dance at the end!!

We hope to hear from you soon;
Mr. O Regan and the scoil Bhríde Smarties!

St. Patrick's Story.

Last week we celebarated St. Patrick's Day. It was on the 17th of March. Some of us went to see paraides and other people climbed 'Croghan Hill'. St. Patrick is said to have ordained St. Brigid a bishop on top of this hill. There used to be a rock on the hill with the footprints of St. Patrick's horse.
We decided to make a story about the life of St. Patrick. Patrick had a hard life when he was younger. We used drawings and sketches of St. Patrick during his life. We hope you enjoy our storyof St. Patrick.

Caillín na Gaillimhe

This week we are learning the Gaeilge of 'Galway Girl'. We will be performing it in the halla on Friday as part of our 'Seachtain na Gaeilge' celebrations. Here is the song with the lyrics to help you. Who knows maybe this time next week we will have our own video of us performing the song.
Slán anois!
Mr. O Regan.

Bhuel de thug mé cos ar an siúlóid mhór
Thart ar lár an lae
Is de bhuail mé le cailín breá dathúil
Agus thosaíomar ag plé.

Agus n'fheadar liom,
Cad a thiocfaidh orm.
Lena gruaig chomh dubh
Is a súile gorm.

Ach thóg mé a lámh.
Thug mé rince di,
Agus phóg mé cailín na Gaillimhe.

Bhíomar leath-shlí tríd nuair a d'oscail an spéir
Níos déanaí ins an lae.
Agus rith muid síos chuig an árasán
Chomh bog an lae i-ay.

Agus n'fheadar liom,
Cad a thiocfaidh orm.
Lena gruaig chomh dubh
Is a súile gorm.

Ach thóg mé a lámh.
Thug mé rince di,
Agus phóg mé cailín na Gaillimhe.

Bhuel de dhúisigh mé agus mé liom féin
D'fhág sí mé i-ay
Le mo chroí bhríste bhí pian laistigh

Agus n'fheadar liom,
Cad a tharlaíonn linn.
Nuair a chasamar leis an gcailín sin

Tá feicthe agam gach uile naomh
Ach ní a leithéid le cailín na Gaillimhe

Our Wormery

Today we collected minibeasts. When we say minibeasts we mean worms, beetles, earwigs, slugs, snails, spiders and flies. We used tweezers to pick up the minibeasts, we used containers to hold them in. Finally we used magnifying glasses to look at them closely.
We also collected soil. Using the magnifying glass we discovered that soil is made up of (or composed of) small stones, sand, rotten leaves and grass and little bits of twigs.  Teacher told us that worms can be used to make soil much better.
We learned that for €3 'Christian Aid' will buy 1kg of worms for a farmer in India so that he can make compost to help his crops grow.
Worms are so good for soil that we decided to make a wormery. Now we can watch our worms (all thirty of them) make patterns as the help the soil and leaves in our wormery.

You can make you're own wormery at home. All you need is a plastic bottle, sand, soil and dont forget to put in worms! (",)

Here is a video of what we did today!
Talk about it at home to your parents, brothers and sisters!!!

Grandparents Day February 2nd 2011

Today we had our grandparents in class for a cup of tea and a few biscuits. We sang a song for our grandparents and we also sang the national anthem. Ciara played the tin whistle and Séan read a prayer that we wrote;

God please watch over our grandparents,
All through the night and day,
Keep them safe and show your love
And keep all their worries away.

We asked our grandparents questions about when they were young.

We learned that nuns used to teach our grandparents and that they would get six slaps if they got in to trouble. This seems very cruel.

A person who writes with theitr left hand is called citóg.
Our grandparents used to go home from school at lunch time.
Odhran's Mamó brought in lots of old things that she used to use when she was a little girl.
We saw a hotwater bottle made out of porcelan.
We saw a lamp for the sacred heart picture that used to hang in every house.
We saw a high nelly bicycle and some old Irish coppers like the pound, shilling and pennys.

Jim's Granny made the day very special for Jim when she gave him a war medal that his Great Grandfather earned in world war one. She also brought in a communion badge that was over one hundred years old.

Naoise's grandad told us a few stroies about school. He used to live in a semi-deatached house that was built in 1918.

Diarmuid's granny and Ciara's granny brought in pictures from when they were little.

Carragh's Grandad told us about his lunchtime at school, we are so lucky that our lunchboxes are stuffed with food every day. It was'nt like this before. He also told us about how his parents were afraid to turn on the light switch!!!

Many more grandparents told us stories and it was so great to learn about Ireland a long time ago!
Thanks to all the Grandparents who helped to make this week so special. We will never ever forget it!

Here is a video that might help us remember things that happened on the day!!

We learned about local landmarks in Edenderry and we took a look at what it might be like to be homeless.

Below is a video that we created using pictures, recordings, videos and music that we liked.

We had to put the video together in class and 'edit' out any bits that we didnt think worked well. This is how we 'produced' and 'directed'our video.

We hope you enjoy it!

Thanks to all the parents that helped in e-mailing pictures and bringing them in to class. We realy appreciate it! If your child's photo did not appear in this video dont worry, they were not forgotten! There will be more videos comming soon where they will be used! Thanks for all the efforts made!..Mr. O'Regan
