Jack and the Beanstalk

Our first podcast

Today was a very exciting day in 'the smarties' classroom. We made our very first podcast!! Everybody got together today to make this recording but first we had each create a book review.
What we did?
Last week we all read at least one book. After we had read the book we wrote about it. Writing about a book after you have read it is called 'reviewing' a book. We 'reviewed' our books under the following headings.
1. Title;    the name of the book.
2.Author; the person who wrote the book.
3. Illustrator the person who drew the pictures for the book.
4. Characters;   the people who are in the book.
5. Setting the place the story happens.
6. Story;  here we write a little bit about the story, but we are careful not to say too much about the ending!!
7. Recommendation;   what did you think of the book? how many marks of ten would you give it?

 Here is the podcast!

You can also do a review on a panto, a film, a story, a video or even an event! If you have any suggestions for anything we could review in class please post a comment and share it with us!
If you would like to write a review up on your computer and post it there will be extra stars for your table after Christmas!

Chinese myths; dragons

This week we made dragons from clay. We rolled the clay into a ball and used our fingers to pinch out differen shaped dragons. We then made different types of dragons from by using various paints. Dragons come from Chinese history. The Chinese believed in a lot of different types of dragons. Each dragon had the body parts from different animals. Some had paws from a tiger, antlers from a deer, ears from an ox, scales and a tongue from a snake and many more.
Look at the different types of dragons we have created in our video below.

For more information on dragons open this slideshow that we have studied!!

The haka

Recently we learned the Haka in class. The Haka is a traditional dance from the Maóri of New Zealand, just like the way we have Irish dancing in Ireland. The dance is performed as a prayer to the Maóri gods. New Zealand danced the Haka just before they played Ireland in a rugby match lately. The 'all blacks' won so something must have done the trick!
Here is a link to the video

Here is a video of our class performing the Haka at Edenderry rugby club!
Thanks to Ms. Karen Duffy, Patsy Gorman and everyone else who came on the day!

I Like Cabbage
I like eating cabbage ,turnip, beetroot, cress,
Very smelly foreign cheese and, best you’ll never guess!
It isn’t  chocolate or ice cream.
No, no it isn’t  custard
My very best, my favourite food,
Is sausages with mustard.

The Goose Who Laid Golden Eggs.
An old man and a old woman had a goose that laid golden  eggs. The goose laid seven eggs a week. The old man and woman sell the eggs from the house. They get lots of money for the eggs. The old man and the woman are very greedy.   One day they had an idea.   If they killed the Goose would there be gold inside the goose?  It turned out to  be like any ordinary goose.  The old man and woman were poor forever more.

Volcanoes

Here are pictures from a volcano we made last month. After reading up on the lost city of Pompeii and acting out a play we decided we would make our own volcano. We used air baking soda and vinegar to create a reaction inside our volcano. We built our volcano out of clay. A useful tip is to build your volcano around a cup (to hold your vinegar). We used red paint to create the lava like colour. No cities were destroyed in the making of this experiment!!!

Did you know??
The liquid rock inside a volcano is called magma.
When this liquid rock explodes to the surface it is called lava.
